Magnificent Meatloaf
It’s a glorious, autumnal weekend and there’s no better time to break out your meatloaf pan, some ground beef, breadcrumbs and spices and get busy. Click through and I’ll tell you a story about the secret ingredient that had Kelly ready to kick my butt…
π² A Classic Staple π΄
I have said this for years, but I think meatloaf is pretty much the perfect food. ~Ree Drummond, The Pioneer Woman (2019)
Maybe not perfect, but still pretty awesome.
When it’s not too hot out to use the oven, one of my absolute go-tos is meatloaf.
It’s easy, filling and makes a marvelous sandwich for the next few days.
Meatloaf is also a perfectly good reason to have tater tots as a side dish.
Quick to make, easy to bake, a crowd-pleaser once it’s done.
Who doesn’t like meatloaf?

Classic Family Meatloaf Recipe
Ground beef, breadcrumbs, spices, an egg.
That is basic meatloaf.
Taking it to the next level, we’re adding diced onion, pepper, possibly even celery.
You really want to kick your meatloaf into high gear?
Gravy packets.
Mix the gravy powder in with the meat, breadcrumbs, diced vegetables and spices.
It’s absolutely glorious.
While we’re talking about tasty colder weather food, let’s look ahead to Thanksgiving.
It’s not just the big turkey dinner.
As the lady in this video says, people turn up 3 hours before the turkey is anywhere near done.
It’s Thanksgiving! Show some hospitality and serve up these cool appetizers to hold them over.

But neither he nor anyone else seems to have gotten around to penning a single line to meat loaf. ~Miriam Ungerer, The East Hampton Star (1988)
A few years ago, when I was writing Merry π Bells, I decided to experiment with my meatloaf just for the heck of it.

π‘ DID YOU PUT π€¬ CINNAMON π€¬ IN THE MEATLOAF?!?!? π‘
Kelly wasn’t into shawarma meatloaf, but I thought it was pretty good.
Well, now that we’re digging into it, it seems I’m quite vindicated.
Shawarma Spice
- All Spice
- Coriander
- Cumin
- Sumac
- Turmeric
- Black Pepper
- Paprika
- Garlic Powder
- Ginger Powder
- Cloves
Ha! No cinnamon at all. βοΈ Vindicated!!! π―
| Okay, that’s a technicality. There are plenty of pretty sweet spices with a cinnamon-style flavor profile.
In any case, I caught such flack from her about the alleged cinnamon in the meatloaf that I did what any good author would do. I memorialized it in prose in the episode of Merry π Bells from December 13th, 2022. Irene Belzer makes shawarma meatloaf and the family π loves it π₯°. The only thing better than giving yourself the last word is memorializing it in print and being able to sell it to people. |

That’s one of the many benefits of being a self-published author.
You get to express your creativity and see it immortalized in an innocuous bit of prose for the rest of eternity.

That’s all for today. See you back on Wednesday for πͺ Veterans Day ποΈ
