Hope Springs Eternal

We’re (theoretically) halfway through the general quarantine period. Even though we’re not seeing any lifting of the stay-at-home orders in the immediate term, we can certainly hope that things start easing up over the next few weeks.

Can It Possibly Get Worse?

Of course, it can. It can always get worse.

On the other hand, it can also get better. We’ve been in a state of fact-deprived panic for weeks now.

We’ve been operating on models, anecdotal best-guesses, Chinese disinformation and a lot of “yay, I have control over people” politicians making largely arbitrary decisions in the name of keeping us all safe.

Okay, how safe is it to bankrupt everybody in the name of public health?

It’s time to start loosening the grip, folks.

The curve may have flattened but that’s because so many of us are stranded at home. As soon as we start heading out again, it will spike and they’ll panic even more and we’ll really be screwed.

But, that’s only if we don’t start taking control. Governors and mayors may grant themselves the right to “protect” us, but they don’t actually have the right or authority. We’ve played along because decent people don’t want to get other people sick. Honestly, with assumed power comes actual responsibility.

They believe they have the responsibility to protect us from ourselves but they also have the responsibility not to bankrupt everyone in their jurisdiction. We need a new approach to disease mitigation. We can protect vulnerable portions of the population while keeping more robust members in circulation.

Let’s get on with that. We can resurrect the economy if the government can stop being a painful speed bump.

Good Old Fashioned Fun

Here Comes Peter Cottontail

Well, even without the egg hunts and family get-togethers, we can still have some good old fashioned Easter fun due to the creativity of Rankin & Bass. These stop motion animation classics are loaded with cheerful holiday tunes and an optimistic view of the world that can be missing in contemporary entertainment.

Stalled

All change is not growth, as all movement is not forward. ~Ellen Glasgow

I’m not going to lie. My daily counts have been decreasing and I only have myself to blame.

No excuses. I’m just not keeping up. For some reason, I’ve had a lot of headwinds this week. I set myself down to work and I find myself falling asleep, being distracted by thoughts unassociated with the story or generally being out of sorts.

Nevertheless, I’m still on track to finish this book in the short term. I’m in the midst of the big reveal for the Conclave. Once they show their ugly faces, stuff is really going to get crazy.

Those are my thoughts for the weekend. I hope we can start coming out of the cave we’ve been crammed into.
