National Daiquiri Day 2025

To bring a little smile to your 🌞 summery 🔥 Saturday, today is National Daiquiri Day. Whether you drink the classic Hemmingway style or the rum-enhanced Rita’s version, it’s a great way to kick back for the weekend.

Personally, I don’t have Hemmingway’s appetite for booze.

I basically don’t drink a drop unless it’s champagne at a wedding or Communion wine at church.

I don’t have anything against it. I just don’t bother with it.

It was all fun and games in college and I only drank socially for fun on the weekends, if at all.

After my bachelor party? Nope. All done. Cured. No need for more, thank you very much.

My God, what a hangover. If that’s not enough to cure you of drinking, I don’t know what will.

That said, I know there are plenty of people who drink responsibly and I don’t hold it against them.

It’s just something I no longer have an interest in.

I get my thrills being home with Kelly…

🍸 Variations! 🍹

Note that the daiquiri is a very fluid concept (no pun intended).

It can be made without slush, but most people automatically think of a strawberry daiquiri anyway.

I guess it’s one of those vague sort of cocktails that can be darned near anything and still be a daiquiri or a martini.

Other cocktails are quite specific in their construction, but it seems that a daiquiri can be quite random.

Ah well, to each their own. Have your daiquiri however you choose. It is a Saturday in the middle of 🌞 Summer 🔥.

Who’s going to judge?

🍹 Where The Wave Falls Away 🍸

They say “write what you know” and Hemmingway knew a lot of things that the average guy didn’t.

He was an adventurer and he brought that to the page.

That’s something any of us can do. In fact, that’s really all we can do.

Anything we write is from our own perspective and experience.

Anything missing from our writing is usually due to our lack of experience in a certain area.

It’s easy enough to say your character shot his gun, but you don’t get the sense of it in the prose unless you’ve shot a gun.

I have. We all had a day at the range in US Air Force Basic Military Training School.

Given my expertise, I could clearly scare the pants off of my target.

I had great grouping, but the cluster was all over the target’s shoulder.

Until I got my cataract surgery, I had myopia.

I needed glasses for driving and other distance-based situations.

Unfortunately, the government-issue “birth control” glasses didn’t sit right.

When I put the butt of the rifle against my cheek for prone firing, it pushed my glasses up to my forehead and I couldn’t see what the hell I was shooting at.

Just as well. I don’t want or need to shoot anybody.

Even so, it is an experience I’ve had. As such, I can speak to that in my writing.

I have never (nor could I have) experienced childbirth from the mother’s perspective.

I was there for Emmeline and Connor’s delivery.

I could sense how arduous it was for Kelly, especially when she bit me (both times).

However, I cannot speak authoritatively on how that feels because it’s not in my wheelhouse.

Kelly could write factually on the subject because she’s been there and done that.

She could not speak to the experience of skydiving, though.

That’s a me thing. I’ve been there and done that. Once was quite enough for me.

So, if you find that your writing is boring and uninspired, go have an adventure.

The more life experiences you have, the easier it is to write about interesting things.

That’s all for today. See you back on Wednesday for some 🍦
