National Ghost 👻 Hunting Day 2024

It’s nearly October, so what better time for it to be National Ghost 👻 Hunting Day? We’re officially in 🍂Autumn🍂, so let’s get spooky…

I Ain’t ‘Fraid O’ No 👻

We know that in September, we will wander through the warm winds of summer’s wreckage. We will welcome summer’s ghost. ~Henry Rollins

As much as people complain about the Christmas music coming on early at the mall, it seems equally weird to start doing spooky stuff at the end of September.

October = Halloween in most people’s minds, so waiting until the first weekend of October would make more sense.

Even so, when you have hardcore Halloweenphiles, you can’t help but get things started as soon as possible.

I don’t feel that bad about it though. It’s practically October now, so hunt those ghosts, show those monster movies, play that spooky music and put bats and spiders on everything.

It is finally 🍂Autumn🍂, so let’s dive in with both feet. The trees are ablaze with color before they take their spooky, skeletal appearance until next 💐 Spring 🌷.

Naturally, being that it’s 🍂Autumn🍂, we should also dive into the Pumpkin 🎃 Spice with both feet. Here’s some evidence of why you should.

But, given the topic of the day, I can only think of this classic theme song…

Ghost 👻 Hunting

Ghost Hunting Alone in a Haunted Graveyard

Ghost hunting shows are a guilty pleasure for us. There are so many of these crazy shows and they all have their own approach.

Granted, they largely stick to the same format: nighttime lockdowns, one-on-one encounter sessions with voice capture technology, FLIR and other doodads that modern ghost hunters use.

It’s the personality of the ghost hunters that makes a difference in the shows. Josh Gates, Zak Bagans, Dalen Spratt and others give us their creepy stalking, their jump scares, their technological ghost evidence and a rollicking good time.

There’s a lid for every pot out there. Some people watch other people playing video games, cooking food, unboxing products, juggling stuff that’s on fire, digging rooms with sculpted furniture out of a patch of ground in the jungle, knitting and even hunting ghosts. We are living in a specialist’s paradise of content creation these days.

Team Spirit 👻

When I was eight, I would look at the cover of the ‘Ghost Rider’ comic book in my little home in Long Beach, California, and I couldn’t get my head around how something that scary could also be good. To me it was my first philosophical awakening – ‘How is this possible, this duality?’ ~Nicolas Cage

One of the things I’m still running cycles on for The Sentinels is the team dynamic. In the Golden Age Trilogy at the beginning of the series, the team is fairly small.

It’s generally pretty easy for people to get along when there are only a handful and they’re reasonably close-aligned on the mission at hand.

Once you add an abrasive personality like the second Foxfire, things start going off the rails pretty quickly.

On the other hand. during the Silver and Bronze/Copper Age books of the Chaos War section of the series, the team grows in proportion with the threat.

The more people you add to the dynamic, the easier it is to run into conflict. Add to that the continued stress of an interdimensional alien invasion and the chaos that spreads in its wake, and even the most well-aligned and sympatico team of heros will start feeling the pressure of their profession.

After the conclusion of the Chaos War, the Modern Age collection that closes out the series puts a serious wrinkle in the whole superhero dynamic by introducing super kids.

Sidekicks date as far back as the Golden Age, but these kids aren’t sidekicks. They’re victims of a cruel experiment and the veterans of the Chaos War have to help the kids deal with their powers and the effects those have on their lives.

As far as The Lights of Pine Hollow is concerned, I’ve gotten started on Grace and Leo’s holiday romance. I’ve got a grasp on where things are going and I’m looking forward to an excellent story this year.

That’s all for today. I hope you have a wonderful 👻 spooky 🍂Autumn🍂 weekend and don’t forget the Pumpkin 🎃 Spice to ward the evil spirits away.
