National Goof Off Day 2025
Apropos to a lovely 💐 Spring Weekend 🌷, today is National Goof Off Day which gives us that much more of an excuse to kick back and enjoy some well-earned downtime.
No One Can Outwork Me
Generally speaking, I’m lazy. I really don’t like to do anything but sit around and chill out and watch TV, but if it’s something I like, if it’s something I’m into, then no one can outwork me. ~Montel Vontavious Porter
I totally feel that.
I could spend decades on “Netflix and chill”, thinking nothing of it.
Frankly, there are so many shows, movies and topical online videos that I am waiting for a free moment to run through that I doubt I could get through them all in a human lifetime.
I have a deeply overwhelming curiosity about a lot of things.
It mostly goes to feed my writing. It’s hard to write convincingly on things I’ve never done without at least having experienced them vicariously through the filter of others’ creativity.
Much like Mr. Porter, the converse is also true.
When I’m into it, you basically can’t stop me.
I’m a conceptual juggernaut when I get locked in on something that needs doing and engages me deeply.
There are a few too many things that fall into that category lately.
I’m overdue for a serious break before I experience a serious break.

National Goof Off Day | March 22nd – National Day Calendar
The whole concept of the modern weekend is designed to facilitate the concept of downtime.
Some people find it difficult to rest. They use their weekend as “downtime” to complete secondary work tasks so that they can burn even harder the next week on core activities.
I have a hard time not doing that.
Even so, I’ve been trying to make my weekends sacrosanct.
I need some actual time off from work to focus on my writing, my sites, my health and wellbeing.
Thank goodness, there are episodes of Reacher for Kelly and me to take time out and enjoy on a Saturday afternoon.
Thank goodness that might even turn into an engaging game of Scrabble for her to win.
Yeah, I don’t get it. She almost always wins Scrabble. It’s uncanny.
Even so, it’s a lovely few hours alone with my lovely wife giving her little moments of dread that I might pull it out and win a game.
Refresh Your Body And Mind
We are human beings, you need to mentally switch off now and again to refresh your body and mind. But I never just lie on the couch in my downtime, I still keep my body in good shape. ~Luke Campbell
I do. I have absolutely no problem resting on a couch doing pretty much nothing at all.
I don’t like going out. I don’t like moving around. I don’t like getting sunburnt or eaten by bugs.
I’ve got entirely too much writing to get done to go walking around willy-nilly.
I’m extremely exhausted from work and need that time on the couch doing basically nothing.
I have no problem luxuriating in a bathtub. You literally can’t do much of anything in a bathtub.
You can float. You can soak. You can lounge. You can rest. It’s a phenomenal opportunity to do precisely nothing.
Eventually, the water gets cold and you get all pruny. Nothing lasts forever.
The next best thing to the tub is the couch.
You can lounge. You can watch movies or TV. You can have conversations or play games.
It’s a marvelous alternative to the tub and you don’t get pruny.
I’ve got plenty of things around the house that need doing and today is specifically the day not to be doing them.
Today is not that day.
Today is for chilling, with or without Netflix or any other streaming service of your choice.
That’s all for today. See you on Wednesday for some leafy green goodness.
