National New Jersey Day 2024
Watch the tram car, please. Today is National New Jersey Day, and the Garden State has played an important part in my life.
Garden State
New Jersey is the most poetic state: close enough to New York to be urban and cosmopolitan, far enough to be desirous and unsure; densely populated, but full of farms and woods, with the most deer of any state. ~Robert Pinsky
We used to go to the Jersey Shore in the summertime. Mom and Dad rented a beachhouse in Sea Isle City and we’d go to the beach, the tourist gift shops, catch dinner in Ocean City and traverse the boardwalk in Wildwood.
It was epic!
That was a great way to grow up. Packing up the car and driving the width of Jersey to the shore with all the latest hits on the radio.
Of course, there’s more to New Jersey than the shore. My sister went to Rutgers and my current employer is headquartered in Florham Park.
We took the kids to see the Old Barracks Museum and back when Emmeline was in her musical tourism phase, we hit a number of spots to see Rixton, The Mosers and others.
That being said, my all-time favorite place in New Jersey is Wildwood and that uproarious boardwalk. Whoever thought of putting mini amusment parks on the piers was a genius.
My favorite ride was always the Planet of the Apes dark ride and no trip to Wildwood was complete without going into the Douglas Fudge Shop.

Gee, I almost forgot about Castle Dracula…
The Story of CASTLE DRACULA, Wildwood, New Jersey
National New Jersey Day

So, here’s a shout out to everything New Jersey. From the cakes of Hoboken to the Pine Barrens, from the cement ship off the coast of Cape May to the many airports we took Emmeline to, Jersey is awesome from top to bottom.
It’s no Pennsylvania, mind you, but it’s a wonderful state that has provided me years of entertainment, charm, tasty food and family togetherness.
🌲😈🌲 The Devil, You Say 🏒😈🥅
I feel like if you’re in Jersey, you have to be a Jersey Devils fan. Anybody born within the confines of the border of the state of New Jersey, I feel, should be a Jersey Devils fan. ~Kevin Smith

The hockey team is named after a legendary cryptid, but have taken on a mythical quality of their own thanks to Seinfeld.
I’m not a huge fan of sports in general, but hockey is among the more tolerable sports for me. I can watch football and hockey if it’s on, maybe even baseball sometimes.
It’s just not my thing. Even so, hockey is going to feature fairly prominently in The Sentinels: Fire & Ice since Slapshot is a minor league hockey player who gets powers like Iceman’s.
Although, I’m not sure he will be quite the same as Iceman or Frozone, Slapshot will have some kind of ice powers.
I haven’t gotten quite that far yet, but I expect to introduce him in the current novel as a secondary character somewhere near the end so that he and Dave Wisler can be at odds in the second book of the initial trilogy of the overall tridecology.
Yes, I just love throwing that around. Thirteen is one of my favorite numbers, so the fact that there’s a specific term for a 13 book series amuses me enough to use it as often as possible.
I realize this post is uncharacteristically short, but my brain is really fried. I have loads to do at work and it’s really sucking up all of my brainpower these days.
So, from hockey back to legend, I leave you with this mini-documentary on the Jersey Devil.

Have a lovely 🌞 Summer 🔥 weekend. Unfortunately, it’s too late to get Zaberized, but don’t let that stop you from going to Wildwood. Just make sure to watch the tram car, please…
