National Waffle Iron Day 2024

🧇 For no other reason than because it can be, today is National Waffle Iron Day. Let’s take a look at this workhorse of the breakfast-making appliance family. 🧇

🧇 Waffles± 🧇

I love a waffle but adding the sweet nutty flavour of the butternut squash makes the waffles so much more flavoursome. ~Rachel Khoo

Waffles are a splendid treat that can be part of a main meal like Chicken & Waffles or a sweet dessert such as a thick Belgian Waffle topped with stewed strawberries and whipped cream.

Personally, I like mine best with vanilla ice cream and crushed maraschino cherries. I think this tastes much better than cat’s tail waffles.

All it takes to elevate your week is to employ this hinged, culinary wonder.

Simply pouring the batter and closing the lid are two quick steps away from delicious satisfaction.

Naturally, you can just buy pre-made waffles and stick them in your toaster, but today isn’t waffle day, it’s waffle iron day.

Let’s look at some other goodies you can make with a waffle iron.

🧇 Not A One Trick Pony 🧇

A while back, I came across a recipe that included smashing Tater Tots in a waffle iron with bacon bits and cheese and so forth.

I couldn’t find that video for you, so here are a bunch of other non-waffle recipes to fully enjoy your waffle iron if you have one.

To be honest, I imagine a lot of these were a matter of trial and error. Somebody thought to put something in the waffle iron and hope for the best.

That’s how some of the best recipes come about. People try unorthodox things and not repeating recipes that taste awful. 🤭

I thought this one would be really good, but seeing this video makes me wonder. Sure, the dude appreciates the unorthodox cookie, but it’s certainly not visually appealing.

The worst thing about the recipe I mentioned above was that while it tasted fantastic, it was a mess to make and even messier to clean up after.

The story of my life could be told in a series of waffle snapshots. I spent childhood weekends watching the lid of our Munsey waffle maker rise and fall as it chugged through a single square waffle at a time. ~Chris Morocco

Another satirical superhero movie that I absolutely love but am not emulating in my Sentinels series is Mystery Men.

The premise of the movie involves a world that is stuffed to the gills with utterly random, half-baked superheroes.

When this world’s Superman-like character, Captain Amazing, tries to boost his publicity by orchestrating the release of supervillain Casanova Frankenstein, it gets him captured.

The Mystery Men are a handful of friends who try to rescue Captain Amazing and learn of Casanova Frankenstein’s evil plan.

Realizing they’re not strong enough to take on this premier supervillain, they hold auditions for more team members.

In the midst of the completely random assortment of yikes-level D-List superheroes, Will Ferrell arrives as The Waffler, whose weapon is the Griddle of Justice. His big selling point? He sings his own Waffle Man theme song.

Will is a comic genius who keeps turning up in super powered and fantasy stories.

His snowball fighting skills in Elf are classic and I was really amused to see him cameo as himself in Season 4 Episode 2 of The Boys starring in a Vought movie with A-Train as a kind of White Shadow coach character.

Something a few of these projects have in common is the corporate aspect. Captain Amazing wears sponsor logos all over his super suit to fund his super career.

The supes in The Boys are all employees of a megacorporation called Vought International that even outstrips the campy, all-pervasive Omni Consumer Products from Robocop.

The Sentinels are a self-funding business founded by a lawyer who grew up on Silver Age comics and a suburban superhero who is a small-scale serial entrepreneur.

Unlike the world-spanning megacorporations mentioned above, the Sentinels are founded to provide protection and structure for the super powered people of the Sentinelsverse.

The Boys have their own take on how supes would function in the real world. Since it is extremely dystopian, Vought’s super creations embody some of the worst excesses of real world celebrities, sports legends and politicians. Under the premise that power corrupts, the more powerful the supes get, the more messed up they get.

As someone who grew up on the largely child-safe Silver Age comics, Lucky’s Sentinels project is intended to gather and give a home and purpose to superheroes who like and protect the public.

The Sentinels are intended to be actual good guys who inspire the people of Empire City and beyond.

Unfortunately, even the best intentions often go awry. The Sentinels will explore, among other topics, what happens when idealism and reality collide.

That’s all for today. Hope you get a chance to fire up your waffle 🧇 iron and make something tasty.
