Easter Joy

I hope you’re having a lovely holiday weekend. The kids will be dying eggs today and we’re heading over to my In-Laws’ for supper tomorrow.

Peter Cottontail

When I was growing up, Easter simply wasn’t Easter without seeing the Rankin/Bass presentation of Here Comes Peter Cottontail. Vincent Price as January Q. Irontail, the menacing goth rabbit is a must-see. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Imperial Easter Bling

What started as a simple gift from the Tsar to his wife became an Easter tradition for decades to come as the jeweler’s art became more ornate and complicated. Unfortunately, Peter Faberge’s fortune was tied to the failing Romanov Dynasty. It’s good to have Imperial favor unless the royal family gets overthrown and eradicated by communist revolutionaries. It’s amazing to see the artistic creativity and the mechanical ingenuity that went into these egg-shaped keepsakes.

Easter

Easter is meant to be a symbol of hope, renewal, and new life. ~Janine di Giovanni

For Christians, Easter is the culmination of the story of Jesus. The empty tomb is an enduring symbol of victory over death. For non-Christians, Easter either doesn’t exist or is just another candy holiday. The pre-Christian fertility symbolism has been dusted off and rebranded for commercial purposes. The Easter Bunny has absolutely nothing to do with the Christian holiday. Unlike Santa, who began his career as the Bishop of Myra in Turkey, the Easter Bunny is an exclusively non-Christian entity. The symbolism is the renewal of life through life rather than of spiritual life through death. The annual rebirth of nature after a long winter’s nap is symbolized by the prodigious fecundity of rabbits.

I hope you enjoy your Easter, however you choose to celebrate it.
