Freakin’ Ouch!

Yeah, yeah, it’s just one of those days. I’ve got a ton on my plate and I’m not accomplishing much.

Hump Day

Okay, I guess that’s not an entirely fair assessment of my work this week. I am accomplishing most of my assigned tasks.

The problem is that the most time-consuming ones were not ones that are set to generate revenue.

I had some old to-do’s that I decided to get off of my plate so they’d stop hanging around my neck like the proverbial albatross. Well, the albatross has left the ship at long last. Now I can get back to my new prepper video series on the importance and treatment of water for survival purposes. (See what I did there?)

Ouchy Ribs and Ankle

Well, the ribs apparently just heal on their own in their own time but the ankle goes on hurting despite the expert ministrations of my excellent physical therapists, Mandy and Keri.

Nothing momentous to report here. Just random griping, but you’re used to that by now.

Ribs have a standard healing time of 4-6 weeks and it’s only been about 3 so the ouch is lingering. I can sneeze again with moderate discomfort, but twisting is not recommended. Chubby Checker will just have to wait until November.

Living Messy

Take chances, make mistakes. That’s how you grow. Pain nourishes your courage. You have to fail in order to practice being brave. ~Mary Tyler Moore

When you want to do something worthwhile, there’s always a risk that it will tank. I’ve seen that in many areas of my life. In fact, I’ve seen it so much that I can hardly tell when I’m getting anywhere anymore. I just do stuff and hope for the best.

That sounds somewhat foolhardy and random, but waiting around for circumstances to be perfect is a losing game. You never know when throwing caution to the wind will result in surprising success and when it will simply drop a minivan on your chest. Waiting around for propitious circumstances looks an awful lot like procrastination.

Don’t get me wrong.

There is something to be said for not trusting blindly in luck. Having at least some idea of where you want to get to ensures that you’ll eventually arrive.

The more certain you are of the destination, the quicker you’re likely to get there.

Even so, just like the thousands of miles of roads in Pennsylvania, life has more than its fair share of potholes to surprise you with. The more flexible you are, the easier you can endure the bumps. Being rigid leads to shattering in the face of obstacles. Going with the flow may seem to have some unpleasant detours, but it’s better than getting wrecked entirely.

A lot of us like to cling to our comfort zones, but that’s not where we need to live. Comfort is often a zone of stagnation. We’d like to live happily ever after, but true happiness is found in its pursuit.

Granted, everybody needs a bit of vacation now and again but who could really stay on vacation permanently? When you’ve done everything there is to do at this resort or that, wouldn’t you be tempted to move on to something different?

I guess there are some people who can just settle down and bum out on the beach indefinitely, but what kind of people are they? Aren’t they just caricatures of who they were when they were trying to achieve that beach bum lifestyle?

Isn’t that the kernel of discontent that led to the definition of ennui? Wasn’t a lot of 19th Century literature centered around the pain of idleness?

Why should it be any different today?

Living happily ever after is a great way to end a fairy tale, but it’s no way to live your life.

Let’s get on with our week. I’ve got things to do and so do you. Just do it!
