In these days of non-stop online π shopping, it’s easy to click the wrong β option somewhere along the line.
Shoes
I did not have three thousand pairs of shoes, I had one thousand and sixty. ~Imelda Marcos
I’ve done this often enough. Bought the wrong size. Picked the wrong payment card. It’s easy enough to do.
The fact that it happened to my super-organized daughter, Emmeline, is pretty funny nevertheless.
What’s even funnier about the misdirected delivery is that it’s a pair of shoes.
We’ve teased her at length about her extensive, Imelda-esque shoe collection. Had she not selected the wrong delivery address, we’d be none the wiser to her new shoe acquisition.
The great thing is that even though she lives far afield, she’s not so far away that we can’t drop them off at her place the next time we go to visit.
Another great thing is that if this can happen to someone as organized as Emmeline, it’s okay for the rest of us to forgive our little missteps in life.
Nobody’s perfect. Nobody needs to be.

How to Subvert Tropes
I’ve already mentioned that Reedsy is among my favorite resources for improving my skill as a writer and publisher.
They put out such excellent content that it’s hard to say enough good about them. It’s a phenomenal marketplace for freelance editors, book formatting specialists, book cover designers and other professionals you’ll need to get your work prepared for prime time.
In the credit where credit is due department, I’d like to give honorable mention to Fictionary, Plottr andΒ ProWritingAid as tools I use frequently and get a lot of value from.
Rooted
Every art expression is rooted fundamentally in the personality and temperament of the artist. ~Hans Hofmann
Ultimately, your characters are facets of your own personality. It’s hard to separate yourself from the process.
You’re either imitating people you’ve met or have seen on TV or in the movies ~or~ you’re doing research to get in touch with parts of yourself you haven’t previously explored.
Writing Main Characters: How to Handle Multiple Protagonists
In my current work, I’m taking on multiple personalities to explore the viewpoints of some archetypal characters.
I’ve got:
- A Hero
- A Fan
- An Anti-Hero
- An Anti-Fan
- An Anti-Villain
These widely varying viewpoints will be experiencing the same events from their own unique perspectives.
Writing Dialogue That Pops off the Page | Reedsy Live
From these five vantage points, the story of The Sentinels will weave an ever-expanding tapestry. I don’t have the advantage of nearly a century of existing material, but I do hope to have something worthy of The Hero’s Journey.
That’s it for a mid-July hump day, friends. I hope you have a wonderful rest of the week.
