Wet And Wooly Wednesday
Started off a bit rainy today, but the sun should be out in time for my appointment.
Planting Seeds
Don’t judge each day by the harvest you reap but by the seeds that you plant. ~Robert Louis Stevenson
I’ve been pretty stressed about how much I don’t get done each day, but I’ve been so busy that I’m utterly wrung out at the end of the day.
Nice thing is, sometimes all the busywork falls into place and I get a big thing done.
Sometimes
In the meantime, I’ve got life going on. Doctor appointments, playing with Rose, cooking dinner, etc.
I did quite a bit this past weekend.
Sadly, that leaves me somewhat exhausted coming into a week of work that’s just as stacked and overdue as the week before.
What’s to be done?
Less, actually.
I need to focus more and do less.
I’ve been spending days jumping from task to task like a flea on a hot brick.
I can’t do that. I need to work on what I’m working on so it can get done.
Unfortunately, focus comes at a cost. Particularly since I can barely freaking see.
Between the eye drops and eye strain from looking at a screen all day, I’m rather worn out by the time supper rolls around.
So, I need to do less of that.
I need to focus inward and get the productive insights that come from that.
Otherwise, I’m racing in a hamster ball. Not even a wheel. Actually a hamster ball because those things go all over the place randomly.
Random doesn’t get the job done.
Being worn out from doing too much doesn’t get the job done.
Doing less and doing it right gets it done.
Knowing More
Trope Talk: Writing What You Know
Since I can’t stand to look at much of anything for any length of time, I’ve been doing a lot of listening.
It’s nice when there’s a visual to put with the words, but listening has been of more importance to me lately.
So, I managed to binge all 5 seasons of The Wire in record time and it was interesting to see how they tied it all up in a sordid, ugly bow.
Some who should have lived happily ever after didn’t. Some who should have gotten their comeuppance didn’t.
It’s an interesting study of an ensemble cast with a diverse spectrum of experience.
It’s not just cops. It’s not just robbers.
Season One started out that way and managed to draw in some of the “civilians” now and again, but each season took on a new aspect of Baltimore and how they had their own thing but still managed to get roped up in each other’s mess.
Such a great story.
Kind of a shame it’s over but I’ve got a huge backlog of stuff I want to get to.
Restoration
What the detective story is about is not murder but the restoration of order. ~P. D. James
That’s one way of looking at it.
In the real world, even if they catch the criminals, convict and lock them away, the damage is done.
Even the process of justice doesn’t necessarily restore the victim’s sense of normalcy, safety or innocence.
The scars are always there. The damage is done.
I’ll need to examine that in terms of The Sentinels. Superheroes are notorious for breaking stuff.
Look at how New York turned out after The Battle of New York in The Avengers. Several MCU projects make reference to it.
It’s always a thing in superhero movies. They break stuff.
One of my very favorite issues of The Fantastic Four featured a city-wrecking throwdown between the Fantastic Four, Gladiator, Captain America and some Skrulls posing as the X-Men.
Gladiator is a Praetor of the Shi’ar Empire and something of a Superman knock-off. He drops into downtown New York and issues a challenge. The Fantastic Four step in to find out what he wants. He thinks they might be Skrulls, so he lets loose on them.
The last panel of the comic shows them standing in the devastation asking, “Who’s going to clean this up?”
I’m not going to go there right away.
That’s going to feature in the Chaos War.
For the Golden Age Trilogy, powers will be relatively low and struggles will be more street-level.
The classic Sentinels have powers and could easily do some property damage, but they don’t really roll that way.
Bigger threats lead to bigger fights.
That’s how it always is with superheroes.
They try to keep it clean and civil until things get completely out of hand.
It’s something comics fans look forward to.
It’s something I’ll be building up to gradually.
Gotta start somewhere, though.
That’s it for this Hump Day. I’m off to see the eye doctor and find out when the sight in my right eye is going to settle in. Not sure I’m going to be able to stand not being able to see clearly out of either eye. The right one needs to start settling in so the left one can get fixed, y’know?
