National Spinach Day 2025
Every day is a great day for fiber, iron, folate and so many more nutrients, so it’s a good thing that today is National Spinach Day. Bullies beware! We’ve got our leafy greens.
🥫 Pop That Can! 💪
Popeye was right about spinach: dark green, leafy vegetables are the healthiest food on the planet. As whole foods go, they offer the most nutrition per calorie. ~Michael Greger
To be fair, I like fresh spinach as much as I like it canned.
I didn’t take much convincing to enjoy this particular vegetable, but watching Popeye open a can of instant whupp-ass definitely wasn’t a deterrant.
It makes a lovely addition to a fresh salad, a marvelous alternative to iceberg lettuce on a sandwich or burger and it’s great for just grazing.
Seems appropriate that one of my favorite leafy greens should be celebrated now that it has officially rolled over to 💐 Spring 🌷.
Fortunately, it still feels pretty much like ❄️ Winter ❄️ around here and that’s just fine by me.
It’s much harder to enjoy hearty comfort food when it’s hot and miserable out, so I’m glad of the lovely cooking weather.

The Best Greek Spanakopita (Updated Video)
Coincidentally, yesterday was Greek Independence Day.
It’s a funny coincidence for spinach day to fall so close behind because I 💖 love 💓 Greek spinach pie, aka Spanakopita.
Any time I’m at a Mediterranean restaurant, I get a massive helping of this marvelous dish.
While I never found that spinach imbued me with super strength, I do have a possibly unfortunate habit of lapsing into Popeye Scat when I’m thinking aloud.

🥫 Nobody’s Perfect ⚓
I realised there were no good role models for kids. Popeye eats spinach, but also smokes and hits people. ~Magnús Scheving
Magnús may not find Popeye to be a particularly good role model, but I always enjoyed his antics.
He’s such a happy guy until Bluto comes around and wrecks things up for him.
He tries to be the bigger man until it becomes unbearable.
The spinach comes out. He tunes him up and life is good again.
This is the basic Popeye formula. In later cartoons, they mix it up by inflicting the chaos of his nephews, wildlife or just outrageous fortune.
You have to switch things up to keep it fresh.
It’s a basic of storytelling. You can roll with what works, but variety is the spice of life.
You don’t want your stories to become predictable and completely formulaic.
That’s why I like to throw little curveballs into my Holiday Season Serial Romances.
You know the girl and the guy will end up together.
You just don’t know if it’s going to be hearts and flowers or stress and drama.
I guess mine have the tendency to fall into the “cozy” region of storytelling.
Well, that’s because Christmastime is cozy for me. That’s how I prefer to experience the season.
The The Sentinels, on the other hand, are decidedly not cozy (except when they are).
Being based on my love of comic books, they span the full array of human (and superhuman) experience.
A tragedy in a Christmas RomCom is if they run out of chocolate chips before they’ve made all the cookies.
A tragedy in comic books is usually life or death.
However, comic books (being comical) also span the full range of positive emotions, too.
I think I have a decent balance. Guess we’ll see whenever I get done and publish them.
That’s all for today. See you back on Saturday for something that goes particularly well with spinach.
