National Oatmeal Cookie Day 2025
Somewhat out of comfort food cookie season, today is National Oatmeal Cookie Day because they’re still great on a lovely π Spring π· day.
Healthy Cookies
I always try to make healthy baked goods, like an oatmeal cookie that literally has only oats, nuts, bananas and apple sauce in it. ~Toni Garrn
The humble oatmeal cookie is the cornerstone of holiday comfort food, but there’s no reason why this cookiefied breakfast food can’t be enjoyed anytime throughout the year.
They’re best when they’re soft and fluffy, but they’re hearty even when they’re dry and biscuitlike.
With a little extra cinnamon and some juicy raisins in the mix, you can have a little hit of Christmas throughout the year.
How can you go wrong?
Even Better With Raisins
A Chewy Oatmeal Raisin Cookie You’re Going to Love
Frankly, the raisins are a crowd-splitter. Some people despise them. Some people insist on them.
I can take an oatmeal cookie with or without raisins, but I am definitely in the pro-raisin camp.
I find it makes the cookie sweeter and chewier overall.
Frankly, to make it even more Christmassy, I’d recommend craisins and chopped green candied cherries.
If you’re going to have a taste of Christmas out of season, you might as well bring the whole color pallet with the sugar and spice.
Cookies For Breakfast
I have a vanilla chai latte every morning, which I usually follow with an oatmeal raisin cookie and eggs for breakfast. ~Dylan Lauren
As a child of the 80s, I am intimately acquainted with the ad campaign for Cookie Crisp cereal.
The angle of this campaign was an incredulous chorus of kids asking, “Cookies for breakfast?!?”
To me, it’s every bit as iconic as “Where’s the Beef?“, “I’ll be back.“, “ET phone home.” or “I’ll buy that for a dollar!” ever were.
It’s kind of funny how incredulity makes for such an enduring impact.
Those of us who are old enough to remember the “You got your chocolate in my peanut butter!” or “How many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie-Pop? commercials can still feel the incredulity in earnest.
For me, I like to throw that into my fiction. Not as a gimmick, but rather as a way of trying to make the stories memorable.
When you’re reading along and you have to jump back and ask, “Did that actually just happen?“, that makes you savor the story more.
It was way the heck back in the 90s when I read through the Red Wedding. Holy crow! That was far worse on the page than on the screen. I was so freaking shocked; it feels like yesterday.
I haven’t done anything quite that earth-shaking (yet), but I believe I’m delivering enough moments to stir the reader.
Just finished Chapter 52 and Easter in the Sentinelsverse is certainly a bit different than Easter in the real world.
Hopefully, I’ve got the recipe just right. Guess we’ll see when I’m done.
That’s all for today. See you back on Saturday for something not to eat.
