Born 2 Weeks Late
So, Mother’s Day is coming up quickly and it’s time to do a little thinking about all the mothers in our lives. Personally, I’ve got my own mother, a mother in law and my own beloved wife of 22 years who is the mother of my four darling children. That is an ocean of maternal love that surrounds me and for that I am supremely grateful.
You should take a moment to consider the mothers in your life, whether they be biological or figurative. Think of the kindness, patience and love you’ve received in your life. Let’s definitely focus on the patience at this juncture.
The sad tale of a born procrastinator
Let me just tell you how unbelievably patient my own mother is. I was born two freakin’ weeks late! Can you imagine carrying a 9lb 9oz bowling ball around for nine long months much less an extra two weeks? I couldn’t even handle a couple of hours with a kidney stone. Merciful God!
So, all my life I’ve been late to everything including the very day of my birth. It was a lucky happenstance, though. I was born on my parents’ anniversary. Makes it easy to remember.
In any case, I’ve always been a pretty laid back guy and punctuality wasn’t something that I really valued all that much. In later years, when it really mattered, I found myself getting to stuff on time only by pretending that I was arriving late for showing up early. It’s just how I roll.
Well, that’s enough to drive my wife absolutely mad. HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! Okay, sorry. I had to have that moment of schadenfreude. Let’s proceed.
Anyway, one can only indulge in one’s bad habits for so long in life without having a negative impact on things. I’m a grown man and it’s time for me to get with the program at long last. So, how does one develop a habit?
I’ll get by with a little help from my friends
Well, it’s good to have smart friends. Spending a bit of time on the internet networking with the hoi polloi of better living has its benefits.
One of my friends shared a post on her site with me. Even though the topic was intended specifically to address how she improved her writing habits, she really let the cat out of the bag on how to form any habit by pegging your new, more productive activities to the same rewards that you were previously giving yourself for wasting time. Her productivity increased. The time spent decreased. The reward remained the same. That was a real eye opener for me and I’m glad she brought it to my attention. That’s the kind of help I really need.
What I’ve also found to be a stumbling block in my attempts to be productive is something another friend of mine addressed recently. The old bugaboo of “It’s all been said and done by someone else already.” is a real bump in the road for a lot of people including yours truly. So, there are a hundred books on any given topic. Each one has its own way to express and explain. Make yours 101 and you will find that people resonate with who you are and how you lay it out. Again, a key reminder and a good ol’ kick in the rump to just quit fooling around and get on with it already!
Along with the notion of having smart friends, I’d like to tell you about my friend Dave. He’s one of the most creative guys I know and he’s cranking out educational materials like a factory. Since he knows it’s a very common problem for people, he’s designed a course on defeating procrastination so we can all be as wildly productive as he is. This course is loaded with extra bonuses to give you maximum benefit for your investment. His “Internet Marketer’s Productivity Suite” is worth at least three times what he’s asking for just this product alone. Add to that his guide to Evernote Essentials and three special reports from Jason Fladlein, and you’ve got at least ten times the value.
New days, new ways
So, with the loving patience of all the maternal forces in my life and the kind indulgence of my very clever friends, I am finally ready to kick the habit of procrastination and take the world by storm. I can get in peak state and make my move, as Tony Robbins says. I can command my subconscious to produce value for my readers through a change in habits. I can make this happen right now!
Okay, it’s way late. I’ll make it happen tomorrow.
Just kidding, y’all. I’m making it happen right now. It’s a new day already and no more time to waste.
Time to make some magic!
Hey Rob, you’re giving the moms in your life exactly what they want for Mother’s Day! As a mom I can tell you that the thing we want more than a bouquet of flowers is for the people we care about to be happy and live to their fullest potential. Okay, flowers don’t hurt. Chocolate is good, too. Well done for the thoughtful reflection…and action.
Thanks Rob enjoyed reading this post, my son was also 2 weeks late and he was a whopping 10lbs 2oz! Love new days and what they have the potential to bring us.
Between this and Liana’s post about writing habits, I’ve came to the conclusion that the good habits I used to have (and the discipline) are no longer in existence. I think we have to replace old habits with new ones.
That’s currently my goal–to get back to my good habits and create a little more discipline than I’ve had in recent years.
For me, when I stop focusing on IM and worrying about what I might miss or what everyone else is doing, that’s when I get lost in the noise. I need to focus on what I really want and start making my own noise. 😉
I’d have written earlier but I thought I’d wait … Always good to find a fellow procrastinator to ponder with, Rob. I get it. We’re old enough now to know better but then we’ve excelled at bad habits, eh? Neat post and nice to call out to your mates. Enjoy Mothers Day – sounds like it will be expensive and joyful!
