Frigidarium

Since we got such lovely snowfall, a cold snap has taken hold to preserve the pristine coating for us.

Cold As A

Choose your own favorite simile, but this week is seriously nippy.

-26°C is about -14°F, which is still ridiculously cold

As I mentioned in the previous post, this is more than reason enough for me to stay inside and attend to my writing.

That being said, errands must be run and it’s always a treat to go pick up my son for visits to his karate school. Since we were over in that direction anyhow, we stopped with my younger kids at the National Museum of Industrial History.

The museum is located in one of the many buildings that used to be part of the massive Bethlehem Steel foundry and has exhibits related to the history of Bethlehem Steel and related Machinery, the Silk industry and Propane industry. They currently have a temporary exhibit associated with the history of radio.

If you live nearby or are planning to visit the Lehigh Valley, this is a very interesting look at the rise and fall of the industries that made the area prosperous.

Ouch

I still get the odd sensation around my chest. The x-rays show that the ribs have healed but yowch. You wouldn’t know it by the way I feel.

On top of that, I can only really do anything for an hour and a half to two hours before the headaches and dizziness set in.

The PA got me on a regimen of Vitamin D and increased thyroid meds to address my lethargy. I’m back in for a blood test on that in a few weeks. I’ll have to ask her about the chest pain.

A week after that comes the colonoscopy. Seriously not looking forward to that…

The Sentinels Movement

The art of writing is the art of discovering what you believe. ~Gustave Flaubert

My characters have been talking a lot about spreading the Sentinels Movement. They formed their superteam for a slightly different reason than most comic book groups do.

In the comics, superheroes usually come together to combat a powerful supervillain or to prevent a potentially world-ending calamity.

The founder of the Sentinels is himself not a superhero. He’s an avid fan of comic books whose godfather happens to have superpowers.

Lucius Deagle saw comic books as a personal blueprint of how the world could be. He felt that if a team of superheroes could actually serve as a good example for people, maybe society at large might take a different direction than what we’re experiencing.

In the story, the Sentinels are a New York-based superhero team. They’ve had some national headlines but they’re not making the kind of impact that Lucius envisioned when he began the group.

The words of Gustave Flaubert that you see above ring true in terms of what I want to do with this collection of stories. Discovering what I believe and putting it into a series of entertaining stories is my way of testing Attorney Deagle’s vision for a better world.

Right now, the Sentinels are focused on bringing a new superhero into the team and seeing if their vision of what it means to be a superhero and model citizen works in the real world. Problem is, she’s got a temper and she’s gotten herself into what might turn into a real problem.

Despite the best intentions of Lucius Deagle, his assembled heroes are still people and they each have a past. It stands to reason that the past is going to catch up with each of them in the course of the series. Can the Sentinels Movement survive the harsh reality of people’s lives? I hope so.

That’s it for mid-week. I’ve got writing to do and errands to run. I hope you’re finding your way in the frosty weather.
