My 🌧️ Kind 🌧️ Of 🌧️ Day

I’ve mentioned before that I’m a pluviophile. Nothing makes me happier than a nice grey, cloudy day.

Always look on the bright side of life, my friends. There are better days ahead.

In spite of all the obstacles we’ve negotiated in the last year or so, hope springs eternal.

No matter how grim things appear on the outside, there’s always a tiny seed of promise growing.

Hold out hope no matter how bad things look. Brighter days are ahead of us no matter how much of a mess people dump in our way.

Today’s going to be a writing marathon, so I thought I’d give you a day’s worth of mood music. Gotta love when people lay out hours and hours of cool. Hopefully, I’ll be doing the same.

The 🩰 Dance

I’ve been out of it for a while due to work-life balance issues, but I’m carving out the time this weekend. I’ve been listening to the seminars. I’ve been reading on tropes and theories. I’ve been listening to my existing work.

It’s all there. Subconscious is (presumably) fully locked and loaded.

The Sentinels are the one and only superhero team on the face of their planet. Their version of NYC is called Empire City. Their world is largely like ours with slight variations (to protect the innocent).

My intention is to take the team through a series arc that basically resembles the “Hero’s Journey” on behalf of the Sentinels as a whole. The series will be broken down into shorter arcs that address the various ages of comic books.

At the start of things, they’re fairly low-powered and they deal with adversaries typical of the Golden Age of Comics. Once they start getting through the golden age gangsters, the real trouble-makers start creating supervillains and things start ramping up like the Silver Age of Comics. As the Chaos War kicks into high gear, it moves into a Bronze Age Of Comics theme. Once that arc resolves, we press on to Copper Age of Comics and Modern Age of Comics arcs to show that the team has come full circle. Okay, that’s pretty vague and utterly meta but it’s still the big picture.

The individual books in the series start with the entrance of Blue Banshee to the Sentinels. The reason there is only one superhero team is that there are so few superhumans in this world so far. The Sentinels were actually a bit concerned that they’d simply fade out. When Tanda’s powers manifest, it’s a breath of fresh air for them. Foxfire can now think about retiring and passing the team on to a new generation rather than letting his passion project fizzle in failure.

The book will be told from a variety of viewpoint characters in order to cover various aspects of the world, the characters and the events. We’ll see the world through the eyes of Tanda “Blue Banshee” Cohen and troubled superfan Claudia Barlucci. We also see the tension within the Sentinels through the eyes of Foxfire’s dyspeptic son, Dave, and their enigmatic alien member, Mary Christmas. To cover some of the darker side of the Sentinelsverse, we’ll also see things from the perspective of David Harz. We see the story from the perspective of a hero, an anti-hero, an anti-villain as well as from a fan and a hater.

Subsequent books will introduce new members of the Sentinels as trouble continues to stir in Empire City. The bigger the threat, the more powerful the heroes who arise. Of course, this begs the question of whether the rise of more threatening villains leads to more heroes or whether the actions and very existence of powerful heroes leads to the creation of more menacing villains. We’ll also see the need to address the unintended consequences of increasingly devastating super combat.

We’ll also see short stories that address certain plot points in the book which show how those events have collateral impact on the citizens of Empire City. You’ll also see in the course of the story that there was a manga series written and drawn by Mary Christmas’ best friend, Angelica Wright. I’m not a manga artist but I’d like to find one eventually to help me create the “Angel and Elf” stories that Claudia and Tanda are fans of.

Enough with the teasers? Yeah. I have to get on with the writing so that this all can come to a bookstore near you.

Today’s the day for working on The Sentinels. I hope you’re getting your projects taken care of this weekend as well.
