Where’s the beef? It’s here on a chilly November Hump πͺ Day with a side of Au Jus as we celebrate National French Dip Day to warm up and enjoy some comfort food.
Is It Really French?
One day a customer saw some gravy in the bottom of a large pan of roast meat. He asked me if I would mind dipping one side of the French roll in that gravy. I did, and right away five or six others wanted the same. ~Philippe Mathieu
The restaurateur was French. The restaurant was in California. The origin, a happy accident. The reaction, purely American.
Okay, it sounds classier if you associate the sandwich with the French. Fair enough.
You’re soaking the bread in Au Jus to get that juicy mouthful of glorious beef flavor.
It’s succulent. It’s decadent. It’s quintessentially French, but it’s really American.
It’s as American as fortune π₯ cookies, π spaghetti and meatballs π or Greek π₯ Salad.
We’re blessed to have immigrants from around the world who bring their distinctive flavors and techniques to create uniquely American dishes.
But today is about the French Dip sandwich, so let’s dive in.

It is Hump πͺ Day after all. You’re obliged to be a bit naughty at the peak of the week.
Imagine my surprise that I come back from my weekly writer’s retreat to find I’m busier than a juggling centipede.
Gah.
Be that as it may, we’re transitioning from π one holiday season π¦ to another π and that’s about as ππ§Έβ cozyΒ βΊοΈπ₯§π as it gets.
Adding French Dip sandwiches to the seasonal collection just makes things even better.
What else is new with me?
I’m 37% done with π‘ππ Goodness & Lights πππ‘ and have been wrestling mightily with ChatGPT for post art consistency.
I got some bad news from the doctor, so I have to behave myself dietarily.
Fortunately, French Dip sandwiches won’t exacerbate my issue and I’ll be too full to eat the stuff I’m not supposed to.
