National Oreo Cookie Day 2024

As much as I’m avoiding the food of the day this year, National Oreo Cookie Day needs to be one of the exceptions to the rule.

Perhaps like you, Oreos were a huge part of my childhood. They’re delicious. They’re dunkable. They’re adjustable.

Adjustable?

Yes, I’m sure I’m not the only one who has screwed the cookie off of two Oreos and made an ad hoc Double Stuf.

Of course, in 1974 this became unnecessary. The folks at Nabisco knew this was a thing and started providing the Double Stuf Oreos.

Me being me (and let’s be honest, you probably did it, too), the Double Stuff  Oreo was also adjustable. Quadruple Stuf Oreos? Hell yeah…

Milk and cookies were never so fun.

Don’t get me wrong. Dipping Christmas cookies in a mug of warm milk is definitely fun, but they’re seasonal. You’ve got to wait.

With Oreos, there is no waiting unless you’re out and need to go to the store and get some more.

So, yeah, for decades I’ve enjoyed Oreos in happy times, in sad times, in good weather and bad. They are the fun cookie for all seasons.

Kind of like my wife, they’re rough and crunchy on the outside (yet sweet) and they’re soft, preposterously sweet and delectable on the inside.

She’s so tasty…

Unfortunately, Oreos don’t make a sugar-free version. Gluten-free, yes, but not sugar-free. Get to work on that, Nabisco!

So, between some other commercial options and recipes like the one above, we still have an option for faux-reos.

It’s nice to have options. Naturally, I can’t sustain myself entirely on Oreos like I could when I was younger, but it’s still nice to think about.

What’s In A Name?

Words fashioned with somewhat over precise diction are like shapes turned out by a cookie cutter. ~Peter De Vries

You may wonder why I always include these random quotes in my blog posts. To be perfectly honest, they serve as a writing prompt.

I have no earthly idea what I’m going to write when I start these things, so I find a quote that speaks to me or to the topic of the day and I roll with it.

Sometimes, I know who the quotable person is and sometimes I don’t.

With some quick research, I learned that the Peter De Vries who is quoted above is an American author who wrote some comical books and short story anthologies in the first half of the 20th Century.

So, it struck me as odd that he turned up on YouTube as a Dutch reporter who got killed over his investigative journalism on gangs in Europe.

You’d think it was pretty easy to mistake one Bob Jones or John Smith for another, but Peter De Vries? The world is big enough for two of them to be famous in their own way.

Of course, when I saw Peter De Vries as the quotester’s name, I naturally thought of Piter De Vries in Dune.

Brad Dourif has so many iconic characters that he’s played, but his rendition of the Harkkonens’ twisted Mentat is certainly one of my very favorite.

So, as you may have guessed, being ludicrously busy at work and tragically deprived of sugar-free chocolate sandwich cookies has left me with not much to say today.

I’m tired. I’m harried. I’m busy, busy, dreadfully busy. I’m making no progress at all on The Sentinels and it’s bumming me out.

I don’t like being behind on my work and it corks up my creative juices when I am. The likelihood of catching up is fairly low. That irks me, too.

That’s all for today. Hoping you have a cheerful chocolate sandwich cookie to dunk in your milk while I work on my computer stuff.
