National Greasy Foods Day 2023
I don’t know what kind of wisenheimer came up with this one, but it seems today is National Greasy Foods Day.

While greasy foods aren’t particularly healthy, they are not specifically off the menu for me. All things in moderation.
That’s the key to most problems, but it bears repeating. If we could just maintain a modicum of moderation, we’d all get along just fine.
Fortunately, I don’t have enough cheddar to do anything but be moderate. What should be a gloriously ostentatious season, is sadly austere this time around.
Easy come, easy go. We’ve got a cozy little cottage to hunker down in and wait for better times. Who could really ask for more?

That’s basically the heart of literature. Putting your characters through difficulty results in the miracle of a well-told story.
I think some AuthorTubers go overboard selling this point, but it is true that if there’s no tension there can be no resolution.
By putting obstacles in your protagonist’s path, you up the stakes of the story.
Guy wants a candy bar. Guy gets a candy bar. So what?
Guy wants a candy bar, but if he goes out to the vending machine to get one, he might miss an important phone call. Okay, now we’ve got some tension. Now it suggests a story.
Guy needs a candy bar to prevent his blood sugar from bottoming out while he’s driving. He’s got one in the glove box, but he can’t lean over to get it without potentially causing a catastrophic accident. See how the tension rises to create the kind of drama that makes a story compelling?
We dialed up the tension in three hypothetical situations involving a guy and a candy bar. Imagine if you started with something a bit more consequential.
There’s always something to be gained by throwing some more obstacles in your protagonist’s way. Nobody likes Mary Sues, so give it a try.
