National Sunflower Day 2025
As the first Saturday of August, today is National Sunflower Day. They are a visual treat that leads to a tasty treat when they’re harvested.
🌻 Delicious Symmetry 🌻
Pick up a sunflower and count the florets running into its centre, or count the spiral scales of a pine cone or a pineapple, running from its bottom up its sides to the top, and you will find an extraordinary truth: recurring numbers, ratios and proportions. ~Name
Nothing says 🌞 Summer 🔥 like a towering sunflower cheerfully tracking the sun.
When they’ve had their day, these happy flowers provide a phenomenally delicious and nutritious harvest of seeds.
Some like to chew the husks to get to the kernels. I am not one of them.
I like my sunflower kernels shelled and packaged. Excuse me for living in the 21st Century.
In any case, it’s a lovely sunflower Saturday and I’m recovering from a rather long week of work.
I’m grateful for the time to zone out and recover from an exhausting grind that will, sadly, start right back up on Monday.
That is then, and this is now. I’m fully enjoying my time off.
Kelly will be back a bit later and we’re going to watch Thunderbolts.
Fortunately, it’s not terribly hot today, so there’s a pretty good chance she’ll cozy up next to me while we watch it.
That’s one of the things I don’t particularly enjoy about Summer.
I’m a portable heat source.
Kelly likes this in my more preferred 🍂 seasons ❄️, but for the hot time of year… not so much.
Today being a bit more clement provides a rare opportunity for some actual snuggling.
That’s certainly something to look forward to. If only we had some 🍕…

Yes, I realize 🍕 has nothing to do with sunflowers or sunflower kernels, but if there’s going to be snuggly movie-watching there should definitely be 🍕.
Another thing I can be grateful for is how I happen to live in a location where we have lovely giant foliage such as sunflowers and stalks of corn all around.
Corn mazes are fun and Yenser’s puts on a marvelous Sunflower Festival every year.
We’re blessed to be surrounded by so much creativity and zest for fun.
It’s one of the many blessings of remote, rural living.
🌻 Be Who You Are 🌹
I can’t feel bad about being who I am, just like the girl next to me can’t feel bad about being who she is. Because a rose can never be a sunflower, and a sunflower can never be a rose. ~Miranda Kerr
I think that’s a marvelous message for anyone.
People like to compare themselves unfavorably to others, but it’s so unneccessary.
You are unique, and you have abilities that others do not.
You bring value simply by being you.
It’s been said that the two most important days in your life are when you are born and when you find out why.
Some people don’t get to the second day.
It’s too easy to get distracted by the travails of everyday life.
Instead of taking stock of who you are and what you want, you get caught up in whatever’s handy.
This is how people get trapped.
They get wrapped up in a job they don’t want to do because they’ve never examined their lives.
Jobs are a lot more fulfilling when you have a passion for what you’re doing.
If your passion isn’t something that corresponds to a job, you can put that into a hobby or pastime.
Eventually, I want my writing to be my primary form of income.
That’s not now. I’d love for it to be now, but it’s not.
But I don’t get caught into traps such as “I want to be like that guy” or “I want what that lady has (without having done what she did to get it)”.
Neither should you.
You do you. Do that to the best of your ability and the rewards will come.
That’s all for today. See you back on Wednesday for a root beer float…
