National Candy Corn Day 2024

To some, it’s a delightfully colored confection. To others, it’s the fruitcake of Halloween. Today is National Candy Corn Day, of all things. Let’s dig in.

๐Ÿฌ Candy Corn ๐ŸŒฝ

The great thing about candy is that it can’t be spoiled by the adult world. Candy is innocent. And all Halloween candy pales next to candy corn, if only because candy corn used to appear, like the Great Pumpkin, solely on Halloween. ~Rosecrans Baldwin

Back in my day…

October 30th was known as “Mischief Night”. It was the precursor to Halloween where the older kids would go out distributing toilet ๐Ÿงป paper into people’s trees and soaping their windows. The meaner kids would play with firecrackers, but that was pretty much the extent of it.

Naturally, since it involved going outside I was having none of it. That was the primary motivation. As a secondary notion, I wasn’t one for causing trouble. I wanted to stay the hell home and watch monster movies or the Great Pumpkin or whatever.

What has this to do with candy corn? Nothing in particular. Thing is, today is National Candy Corn Day for purposes of a themed post but I’ve always known today as Mischief Night.

So, Rob, why don’t you just title the post “Mischief Night”?

Scroll up three lines and see the answer: I don’t care. I didn’t participate in Mischief Night. It’s just a point of reference.

As for candy corn, I’ve eaten plenty of it in both childhood and adulthood. It’s not my favorite, but I don’t detest it as strongly as some do.

It is one of many American inventions that has caught on. While candy corn is consumed primarily in the US, it tends to follow traveling Americans or people who have traveled to America.

It’s a colorful treat that has been fine tuned to be pleasing to one’s mouth. I always thought it was honey-flavored, but the experts say it’s a combination of vanilla and marshmallow.

Apparently, there are sugar-free candy corn recipes but I’m not sufficiently enamored of the confection to have gotten around to trying any.

If I weren’t on an austerity diet, I’d probably cast a curious eye to find some. Last thing I need right now is candy, whether it’s sugar free or not.

Candy Corn Is The Fruitcake Of Halloween?

The worst thing about Halloween is, of course, candy corn. It’s unbelievable to me. Candy corn is the only candy in the history of America that’s never been advertised. And there’s a reason. All of the candy corn that was ever made was made in 1911. And so, since nobody eats that stuff, every year there’s a ton of it left over.ย ~Lewis Black

That’s low hanging fruit for a comedian. As we saw in the videos above, tons of candy corn is made and sold annually.

In the performing arts, you tend to lean on tropes. People expect to see certain bits.

That’s fine. We can accommodate.

You can’t have a romance without a “meet-cute”.

You can’t have fantasy without magic and maybe a big shiny sword.

You can’t have a Jean Claude Van Damme movie without an explanation of why his character happens to have a French (actually Belgian) accent.

There are just some notes you need to hit in order to satisfy the audience.

On the other hand, there is the notion of writing the story you want to read.

In this case, you are the audience and the only points you need to hit are the ones that make the story work for you.

I know you’re wondering how I’m going to wrangle this into some sort of an update on The Lights of Pine Hollow. ๐Ÿ‘ˆ๐Ÿพ That’s how.

Sure, it’s an abrupt and awkward segue but that’s what you get after a brain-crushing day of work.

Come on, people! I’m tired. Don’t count on clever. I can’t get there from here.

Anyway, I’m written up to the 6th of December. I’ve got an unexpected twist. It wouldn’t be much of a twist if it was predictable.

That’s all you get. Be on your way. I’m not the house giving out the jumbo-size candy bars on Halloween here.

Take your fun-sized teaser and be gone with you.

That’s all for today. I hope you have a sweet Hump ๐Ÿช Day and don’t get into any mischief.
