One Down, One To Go
My cataract surgery seems to have gone well. 👁️ Left eye gets done next month.
Life Is Simple
Life is really simple, but we insist on making it complicated. ~Confucius
I’m not one for keeping things simple. It simply never works out that conveniently.
Despite the unintentional complications that come along, I’m grateful for the odd occasion when things go smoothly.
My surgery was one of those things, thank goodness.
We got in early. Everything went to plan. Everybody was prepared.
I thought I was going to be out for the surgery. They told me I wouldn’t be because of reasons.
Fortunately, whatever they gave me was good enough to substitute for being completely under.
I have no earthly idea what happened after they wheeled me into that room.
So much the better.
I would love for the same to be the case next month when I go back to have my left eye done.
Guess we’ll see.
Bingeworthy But Farcical
Peacemaker | Official Trailer | HBO Max
Wasn’t feeling up to doing terribly much in the wake of the operation, so I binged this new series.
It’s based on a character from The Suicide Squad who is assigned to a black ops team in his home town.
If you don’t mind rampant vulgarity and gratuitous nudity (I don’t), then you’ll probably find this pretty funny.
The character building is a bit childish, but it grows on you.
Again, still not a big fan of saving the entire world stories, but it has the virtue of being limited in scope. Which is to say, even though they’re saving the world from “the butterflies”, they’re doing it within a couple miles of Peacemaker’s trailer.
Things That Bother You
Telling a story in a futuristic world gives you this freedom to explore things that bother you in contemporary times. ~Suzanne Collins
I guess I’m still not there with the whole theme thing.
One of the big features of speculative fiction is the commentary on this social issue or that.
That’s not really where I’m coming from.
I don’t care about social commentary. At least, not as far as my stories are concerned.
I have no problem expressing myself personally, so that’s what I do.
My social commentary comes directly from me, not surreptitiously through my stories.
My stories are a thing of their own. I simply want to examine the What Ifs associated with my favorite genres.
Perhaps I’ll be written off as escapist, but I think there’s room in the world for stories for their own sakes.
I don’t feel like being preachy in my fiction. There’s plenty enough of that on the shelves already.
Got to keep it short today. Recovering from surgery leaves me a bit worn out. I hope you’re having a lovely weekend.
