Long week. Lots accomplished. As always, it’s still not nearly enough. I’m just exhausted, and it’s time to chill.

Spitting Seeds

Don’t judge each day by the harvest you reap but by the seeds that you plant. ~Robert Louis Stevenson

Hopefully, I planted the seeds of getting them to hire somebody to share my workload with. I’m gonna lose my freakin’ mind.

I have a job. I have a skillset that allows me to go above and beyond. I’m called in on ancillary projects.

That’s all to the good but when everything is due at the same time, it pretty much guarantees I’m getting nothing done.

Work needs time to complete. There are only so many hours in a week, even if I go above and beyond.

You want more time in a week? Add another person to the mix. I can only do so much.

Secret Headquarters

Secret Headquarters | Official Trailer | Paramount+

Okay, it wasn’t Citizen Kane.

Truth be told, I don’t think Citizen Kane is Citizen Kane. Movie critics have this impossible standard to meet and nobody seems to get what they’re even after.

If you look at the disparity between critics’ ratings and audience ratings on any given movie, you’ll see that the numbers tend not to track.

The audience wants to see a good story. If you’ve got awesome special effects and breathtaking cinematography, great. If it was shot with somone’s iPhone in a dingy apartment, great. Who cares? As long as the story is good, people are happy.

This story was good.

It tackles some superhero tropes and winds up with a legitimately earned happy ending.

There’s a nice redemption arc between The Guard and his son, Charlie.

There’s a prophecy arc between The Source and villain, Ansel Argon.

There’s a retribution arc between Jack “The Guard” Kincaid and Captain Sean Irons.

There’s even a sort of redemption arc between Charlie and his would-be sweetheart, Maya.

All the loose threads are tied up throughout the story and the entire package is greater than the sum of its parts. I don’t see anything not to like here.

Secret Headquarters (2022) – Wasteland Film Review

Dude, what do you want? Shakespeare? It’s a superhero movie for and about kids.

I think the character development was fine for a one-shot, PG-rated superhero flick. All the pieces fit for me even if they don’t for the movie critic types.

It was fun. It was silly. It was totally worth an hour and 44 minutes of my life. Good job, all. I really enjoyed it.

Labor Pains

Without labor nothing prospers. ~Sophocles

So, yeah, that plan I had where I’d be jealously guarding my off-hours for Sentinels and Christmas All The Time projects? Not so much, but that ended yesterday.

I have to acknowledge that I’m not going to get everything that I need to get done at work without some help from others.

I’ve gone the extra mile and quite a few more besides. I’m not getting there on my own.

I’m also not getting my own work done. I do have things that I need to do outside of my day job.

Among them are August and September’s posts for Christmas All The Time. I had wanted them to already be done by now.

I had even set a plan to accomplish that goal, but there was always something that absolutely, positively had to be done by a certain date.

😠 Well, you know what? So do I. 😠

I have things that absolutely, positively must be done by a certain date and they’re not happening if I keep doing what I have been doing.

It’s getting me 😠 angry 😠, if I’m being honest.

That’s no good for anyone. I can’t be creative if I’m 😡 pissed off 😡. Another time waster among many.

I need to do a better job of separating life and work so I can get on with the life part.

I slammed the airlock shut behind me last night when I got done work at quarter past midnight.

It’s not going to open again until Monday morning for any reason. My weekends and evenings and PTO days are mine from this point forward.

Frankly, I’m risking burnout and nobody wants that. To that end, I’ve put in for this year’s No Monday Policy days. I expect they’ll be approved in short order.

That’s all for this weekend. I’ve got plenty of non-work work to accomplish and this is only a small part of it. I hope you’re finding your weekend very relaxing and restorative. Mine, of necessity, shall be as well.
