Thousands of lightning bugs glow across a rolling Pennsylvania backyard at twilight beneath the hand-lettered title “Twinkling Fields.”

Twinkling Fields

It’s a twinkly Hump 🐪 Day in the hotter seasons of the year when we tend to see lightning bugs dancing in yards and fields…

One of the things that made my childhood absolutely magical was the nightly dance of lightning bugs after a long summer day.

As much as I totally can’t stand going outside, the galaxy of lightning bugs floating around and twinkling was something that made it worthwhile.

It looked like Star Trek, Star Wars or maybe Christmas right in my backyard.

Funny how a bunch of bugs minding their own business can turn a field, forest or yard into a twinkling patch of magic.

Firefly facts: we could also say lightning bug facts! | Animal Fact Files

lightning bugs at evening

Watching a field of living fairy lights was very calming after a long hot day.

Whether that day was a holiday or birthday party, whether it was a normal day playing with friends, a magical evening watching the gentle dance pressed my reset button.

Something else from my childhood regarding lightning bugs, or fireflies as they’re called in other regions of the country, is this marvelous book.

It was always on the To Read pile because Gus is an absolute agent of chaos. 🤣

Sometimes fun isn’t really fun and you need a wise old owl to help set you straight.

Here’s a read aloud video of this marvelous book that takes me back to simpler days.

Sam and the Firefly – Read Aloud Picture Book

It’s entirely possible that this book helped form my sense of existential horror at Hollywood’s tendency toward spectacle for its own sake.

Gus going hog-wild and causing traffic accidents for fun seems like the basis for one of my Collateral Impact stories if Gus was a chaos-touched individual instead of an uninhibited firefly.

Perhaps it was the sense of calm wonder at watching a bioluminescent starfield each evening that inspired my imagination.

Certainly, it was the splendid collection of toys, storybooks and TV programs that inspired the specifics and taught me the building blocks of storytelling.

But it was the pure magic of a galaxy in my backyard that gave my imagination a quiet place to sit and simply be while the elements of story danced with those miraculous sparkling bugs.

Now, I’m halfway through Chapter 37 of The Sentinels: Heartstrings and still going strong.

I already know what the end-of-book cliffhanger is. I’m itching to write it and press on to The Sentinels: Doing the Work.

That’s all for today. See you back on Saturday for chilled 🧊 beverages…
