Flow State

I’ve been living in a fragmented state for a while now. Disruption is as commonplace as it is jarring. Like a half-forgotten myth, I’ve been thinking about flow lately.

Big Bad One

Communism is like one big phone company. ~Lenny Bruce

As such, one would have no choice of provider. The provider would have no incentive to provide decent service because there’s no competition and you know damned well they’d be listening in to find an excuse to cut your service off or charge more for it. Life would suck all around.

Welcome to 2021.

The lunatics are running the asylum and they’re going to do as much damage as they can as quickly as they can so that they can set down roots and become virtually impossible to get rid of.

C’mon, man!

Needless to say, the dissolution of our entire way of life has been pretty distracting but not as distracting as changes in my health and my daily schedule.

I’d prefer to get back on level ground and start functioning with some of the ease that used to mark my days. There have been times when I could easily settle into a flow state and get a LOT done. Anymore, it’s been a struggle just to accomplish anything.

I suppose I still need to adjust to my latest life-threatening ailment before I can find some equilibrium but still…

An interesting thing about flow is that it actually involves shutting down a large part of the prefrontal cortex. Neural imaging shows an enormous section of the brain shifting into neutral.

This not only turns off a person’s perception of time but it also silences the inner critic who often stands in the way of making creative advances.

Force Of Nature

In the world of words, the imagination is one of the forces of nature. ~Wallace Stevens

If my imagination is a force of nature, it’s the doldrums. I am dead in the water.

Part of it is that I’m so damned exhausted all the time.

Part of it is that I’ve been extremely busy lately, which exhausts me further.

It’s all very distracting and keeps me from returning to flow state.

Don’t even get me started on the pain. Good grief, everything hurts.

It’s hard to see the big picture in such a state. It’s hard to even see a piece of the picture when it feels like someone’s driving a railroad spike into your back.

I did make a bit of a step forward this week. I’ve got a tool that will help me map out the character arcs for my point of view characters.

Of course, I will need a moment when I’m not blinded by pain or laid low with physical and mental exhaustion.

🙄 😒 Oy! 😔 😴

Frankly, it’s all I can do to write this. My eyes are burning and my lids are beginning to droop well before my intended bedtime.

I’ve always found my best flow state to occur between 9PM and 2AM but I’ll be lucky if I’m still watching whatever BS my wife puts on the TV in a semi-zombified state by then.

This utterly sucks. I feel like I need a nap but I suspect I’ll wake up from my nap tomorrow morning.

Nature sucks.

That’s today for you. I’m going to try to go with the flow and see if I can get more words cranked out this weekend.
