National Dessert Day 2023

Today may be National Dessert Day, but that’s pretty much every day for me.

Work & Pleasure

Work is the meat of life, pleasure the dessert. ~B. C. Forbes

I like a nice dessert. Sometimes I eat dessert before I eat the entrée. We don’t have food police or schedule police or anything like that.

Do what you need to do. Sometimes you need to work. Stuff needs doing and it’s not going to happen unless you do it. Meat and potatoes, baby.

Been there, done that. I’m freakin’ whupped. This is supposed to be my slow season. Hygge in full effect.

Well, not so much.

Be that as it may, it’s the weekend now. Serve me up some dessert, thank you.

Something sweet, like my beautiful wife. Something to make the work worth the effort.

It’s time to do what I scheduled my No Monday Policy for, and I’m not doing too badly this year. I may actually get done early enough to circle back and do some editing.

Maybe.

Tasty’s Top Dessert Recipes

Thank goodness there are dedicated foodies out there to post awesome videos like this. I can’t have pretty much any of this stuff, but it is still a feast for the eyes.

There are plenty of wonderful sugar-free treats that I can have periodically. I’m fortunate to live in a time and place where such things are available and that I have the wherewithal to sometimes budget them into the pantry.

What I don’t have to pay extra for is my lovely wife’s sweet disposition. I am blessed to have a best friend with a delightful personality, a joyous heart and a smokin’ hot body.

As usual, at this particular time of year, I feel a great swell of gratitude for the many blessings in my life. As I said before, 💙 Awesome Wife | Awesome Life 🤍

A Bit Like Meringue

Comedy just pokes at problems, rarely confronts them squarely. Drama is like a plate of meat and potatoes, comedy is rather the dessert, a bit like meringue. ~Woody Allen

There are people who get really spun up about how stories address social issues or the human condition in general.

We generally admire writers like Charles Dickens who use their books as a soapbox. Some writers do better at this than others.

The thing we like about Dickens and some of the famous Russian authors is that not only did they address issues of the day, but they wrote a solid story around that concept.

I don’t think we get a lot of that today. 19th Century literature benefitted from the ability of both author and audience to concentrate for long periods of time.

Today, we’re a bunch of dopamine addicts who can’t go ten seconds without a hit. Social media likes. Text messages from friends and relatives. Whatever revs your engine.

All we want is constant attention and frequent stimulation. Sometimes, we just need to turn it off. That’s easier said than done.

For me, I can be off or on. I get caught up in doom scrolling on Facebook, YouTube or a news aggregator.

I can also, fortunately, slip into flow state and write thousands of words a day. Without this ability, I’d be incredibly frustrated.

If you find your life flying by as you thumb your way down a social media stream, declare a stopping point.

Decide when you’re done, whether that’s thirty seconds, five minutes or even an hour, call a lid on your short attention span theater and go engage in a hobby, take a walk or just sit and watch the leaves fall. 🍂Autumn🍂 is uniquely structured for relaxing and letting go.

If you haven’t got a book inside of you waiting to be written, do what you do when you’re relaxing.

Go fishing, do a puzzle, listen to an audiobook of a classic piece of literature. Do something hygge and unwind a bit.

Life’s too short to go running around chasing dopamine hits.

That’s it for today. Carol’s Christmas isn’t going to write itself. I hope you have a lovely weekend.
