Six Geese A’ Laying 2020

Yes, I realize those geese are flying. C’mon, man! There’s only so much you can do with free, public domain images on short notice…

Loosey Goosey

The snow goose need not bathe to make itself white. Neither need you do anything but be yourself. ~Lao Tzu

Who knew geese had so much character?

The goose is known as a harbinger of 🍂 Autumn 🍂 around here. When you see the geese flying in a ‘V’, you know that awesome things like Halloween, apple cider, pumpkin spice everything and other 🍂 Autumnal treats 🍂 are on their way.

The goose is also known as a classic Christmas dinner. Various versions of A Christmas Carol tend to vacillate between the rejuvenated Scrooge buying a prize turkey or goose for the unsuspecting Cratchitt family.

Even so, old Lao has a point. You don’t need to be anything but yourself. God made you to be exactly who you were meant to be. There’s a need for 👉you👈 in this world. If you don’t know what value you bring to the world, there’s no better time than the cusp of the New Year to give it a proper think.

Truth is, that’s the real point of New Year’s Resolutions. All this new year, new me stuff is designed to sell you gym memberships and life coach services.

There’s nothing wrong with the current you that a candid assessment won’t resolve. Be who God made you to be and things will be significantly better than they were before you figured out what you’re actually bringing to the table.

The early Celtic Christians called the Holy Spirit ‘the wild goose.’ And the reason why is they knew that you cannot tame him. ~John Eldredge

I’ve always seen the Holy Spirit depicted as a dove (which, in English, conveniently rhymes with love). Of course, the dove in question seems to be dripping fire from its beak, but it’s symbolic and getting it on you has miraculous side-effects.

It also gives the Russian Orthodox churches those splendid “onion domes”. Yes, that’s supposed to represent the tongues of flame that the Apostles received in the Book of Acts which enabled them to be clearly understood by speakers of many languages like a holy Star Trek universal translator.

I shudder to think of how different that scene would be if the Holy Spirit had shown up in the form of a goose because, well, you know what geese do when they’ve got a spare minute. They do it a lot. Some types of symbolism work better than others, really.

Here’s a bit more on geese. When I was in grade school, we got to sing holiday songs of all kinds when the holidays rolled around. One of my all-time favs was Christmas Is Coming.

Why? Because I loved Christmas. What’s not to love about Christmas when you’re a kid? Gifts, cookies, Rankin & Bass, awesome music… Christmas rocks!

Christmas Wishes

Great minds have purposes; others have wishes. ~Washington Irving

So, after months of hype and hoopla, we got to see Wonder Woman 1984 on Christmas Day.

Meh

It had neat effects and cool action scenes but the movie was kind of a fizzle for me. At a time when we all wish we could just go visit loved ones without all the hassle, tyranny and virtue signaling, releasing a movie whose core message is that wishing sucks seemed a bit off track.

Wonder Woman 1984 – Official Main Trailer

I’m not sure why DC has such a hard time putting together an upbeat movie with a happy ending. Clearly, she saved the day and everything went back to normal but it wasn’t really a happy ending.

I’m rather hoping not to suffer from that problem when I get going on my Sentinels series. I’ve got a lot of bad stuff to pack into that series, but I’m hoping to let the heroes still be likable and upbeat. I’ll have to do a closer study of the corpus of Marvel, DC and other superhero genre media to find out how not to have a high-end fizzle like Wonder Woman 1984.

Well, that’s enough for today. We’re running out of year rather rapidly and I still have plenty of things to get done before the confetti starts flying. I hope you’re have a lovely 12 Days of Christmas, too.
