National Encourage a Young Writer Day 2024

To be honest, every day should be National Encourage a Young Writer Day, shouldn’t it?

Here’s To Another Generation Of Professional Dreamers

The ability of writers to imagine what is not the self, to familiarize the strange and mystify the familiar, is the test of their power ~Toni Morrison

Not everyone has the bug to be a writer. Fair enough. I don’t have the bug to be a woodworker, a shade tree mechanic, a Texas Hold’Em ringer or quite a few other popular pastimes.

For those who do, regardless of age, I applaud my fellow writers. I encourage you wholeheartedly to get your ideas down and share them with everyone who enjoys your chosen genres.

Not too long ago, the dream of being a published author depended entirely on a highly selective few gatekeepers. That’s no longer the case.

Self publishing has opened the doors to so many in a way that is more reminiscent of the age of Johannes Gutenberg or of Benjamin Franklin.

Some think this is chaotic. Some think the garbage filter has been taken off and we’re subject to a firehose of mental garbage.

Dude, try watching network TV or most of what’s coming out of Hollywood anymore.

We need more voices, not fewer. It’s hard to find new geniuses without being able to hear from them.

If you’ve got the bug, get typing. Learn how to self publish and make your voice known.

Advice

Ray Bradbury advice to young writers

I have no advice other than to do the work. Write your stories. Find your voice. Hone your skills. Learn how to publish your work. Do what makes you happy.

There is a ton of advice available on YouTube. Some of it is even good. Grab some books on writing from the library. Join a writer’s group. Be creative and don’t take no for an answer.

Wild Minds

There is no way that writers can be tamed and rendered civilized or even cured. The only solution known to science is to provide the patient with an isolation room, where he can endure the acute stages in private and where food can be poked in to him with a stick. ~Robert A. Heinlein

That sounds just about perfect. I’d love to be locked in a room for a while and I’d be extremely happy to have someone deliver meals periodically.

Frankly, I’d like to be able to do something other than spend 12 hours a day working on cockamamie reports. I’m tired and I’m frustrated at my lack of work / life balance.

It’s beginning to hack me off.

That’s all for one shiny 💐 Spring Hump Day 🌷. I hope you’re having a productive week.
