Rainy Day

Here we are at another Wednesday and it’s grey and drizzly. Most people would want to complain at this point, but I love, love, love a grey drizzly day. Why?

Because I Don’t Have To Go Outside!

If you weren’t already convinced I was some kind of nut, this might have pushed you over the finish line.

Whatevz, yo.

To each their own.

I’m naturally a homebody. I’m also one who likes staying inside.

Inside my house.

Inside my room.

Inside my head.

I like being inside. That’s basically who I am.

Don’t get me wrong. I have grand desires to see exotic places and travel the world, but that’s the sprinkles on the flowers on the icing on the cake. The cake is staying home and enjoying the experience of being there.

Rainy Days Are Inspiring

Because a rainy day is natural motivation to stay inside, it puts me in a state of mind to be creative. Knowing for a fact that there will be no need to go out and do things means that I can stay in and think things. Uninhibited staying in is very inspirational for me.

The cool caress of a rainy breeze wafting through the house puts me in an almost meditative state. That is very conducive to creativity.

Well, it is for me anyway…

Rainy Days Are Romantic

I don’t think I’ll get a lot of argument on this point. Dreary days with a damp chill are a very good reason to have your special someone cozy up next to you and spend some quality cuddling time together. Some people find a rainy day depressing, but any excuse to have my beautiful wife huddled up next to me on the sofa has got to count as a genuinely wonderful thing.

“Laughter In The Rain”

Strolling along country roads with my baby
It starts to rain, it begins to pour
Without an umbrella we’re soaked to the skin
I feel a shiver run up my spine
I feel the warmth of her hand in mine

Ooh, I hear laughter in the rain
Walking hand in hand with the one I love
Ooh, how I love the rainy days
And the happy way I feel inside

After a while we run under a tree
I turn to her and she kisses me
There with the beat of the rain on the leaves
Softly she breathes and I close my eyes
Sharing our love under stormy skies

Ooh, I hear laughter in the rain
Walking hand in hand with the one I love
Ooh, how I love the rainy days
And the happy way I feel inside

I feel the warmth of her hand in mine

Ooh, I hear laughter in the rain
Walking hand in hand with the one I love
Ooh, how I love the rainy days
And the happy way I feel inside

Rainy Days Are Great For Working

Working is actually a pleasure. It’s just very time-consuming. It’s a way of life. I find that I can work when I travel and work when I run. There is nothing like, on a rainy day, to work. ~Helmut Jahn

The chore list drops radically on a rainy day.

Mowing the grass? Nope.

Frittering around on outdoor projects? Nope.

Firing up the grill? Nope.

Not gonna happen.

The rhythmic drip on the rooftop and the somber grey of the sky is the perfect backdrop to a day of really creative work time.

There’s no notion of taking an extra long lunch walking around in the sunshine.

There’s no parboiling in your own juices in the sweltering heat of a sunny summer day.

No, to the contrary, there’s a glorious soothing cool that makes long stretches of creative endeavor not only possible but actually pleasurable.

For me, it’s a great time to get my head back into my novel. I mentioned before that the novel I’ve got mostly done has decided that it wants to be fourth of five in a long story arc. Cool, it can sit there a while longer. It’s waited enough already that a bit longer won’t hurt. Additionally, the stuff I was cramming into incidental backstory can actually be given full narrative in the first three books.

I hope that wherever you are, it is the kind of day that you treasure. If it’s not, I hope you can find a way to enjoy it anyway.
