Summer’s Kicking In
I heard the forecast for today and I was pretty horrified. They want it in the high 80s, possibly even into the 90s. Yuck!!!
Ick! Ugh! Oh!
We had some stormy weather over the weekend and the differentiation in the barometric pressure had some really unpleasant side-effects. What a freaking pain in the everything. God above! My ankle was throbbing. My knee was pulsing. My chest was stabbing. It’s genuinely heck getting old.
I don’t know what’s worse, the painful transition from one meteorological state to another or the sweltering destination.
As you know, I’m no fan of summer. I’m generally hot. In cold weather, I generate heat. My wife loves having me as her personal space heater in the more comfortable months but when it’s hot out it’s absolutely unbearable for me.
Damn Hot
For pity’s sake! They want it in the high 80s for the next few days and the low 80s for a bit after that. Yuck!

One of the interesting things about the creative process is being able to get out of myself for a while. When I’m writing, it’s like I’m watching a movie. It’s immersive. I’m so engrossed in observing and recording this alternate reality that my feelings and surroundings are essentially immaterial.
I’ve been thinking more and more about the Sentinels Movement. Lucky keeps talking about it but I haven’t put my finger on exactly what it is.
Superheroes like the Justice League, The Avengers and the Justice Society typically have some founding principles. Lucky, as a lifelong fan of comic books, founded his superhero team on these sorts of principles. But what are those principles? What is the Sentinels Movement?
I’m not sure yet.
Is it just the standard superhero code against killing? Should they have that? As Judge Roy Bean said, Some folks just need killin’. It’s an interesting question.
Ultimately, in their world, the Sentinels are meant to be an experiment in societal engineering. The key difference is that societal engineers are usually oligarchs or autocrats who are trying to broaden and maintain their power base. Lucky’s plan is to create a better world using his team of superheroes as a beacon of hope and decency.
Unfortunately, that’s a bit too vague. Lucky and Tim had years to stew on this and come up with a plan. For me, it just hasn’t gelled yet.
The funny thing about comic books is that while certain superheroes strive for a better world, the real thrill of the genre is the absolute chaos that they bring to the world they inhabit. Lucky wants to make the world more like the Federation from Star Trek. He wants people to be their best selves. Nice overall goal but still pretty vague.
Hopefully, it will reveal itself to me before much longer. Perhaps the difficulty in defining Utopia is what makes it unattainable. In order to draw a map, you need to have a clear idea of your destination. Try drawing a map to heaven on Earth. Hence my difficulty in pinning down the Sentinels Movement…
I hope you’re enjoying your summer as much as I’m not enjoying mine. I’m going to spend more time writing so I can cool my heels in that other world.
