Allan’s Eagle Ceremony

Looks like the sun is going to come out from behind the clouds in time for the ceremony this afternoon. Not my cup of tea, but it’s also not my day. It’s a day to celebrate Allan’s achievements.

Spreading His Wings

If you make listening and observation your occupation you will gain much more than you can by talk. ~Robert Baden-Powell

Allan walked the whole trail from Cub Scout to Eagle Scout. Every step along the way, he quietly persevered as he built new skills, made new friends, went new places and became a new person.

He’s a quiet, thoughtful person who takes his responsibilities seriously. He has a keen eye for detail and pointed curiosity.

These are attributes that will carry him as far as he wants to go.

He just has to make a decision.

It doesn’t have to be a final, immutable decision. Just a choice of direction, really.

He’s in 12th Grade and that’s the time to make these kinds of decisions.

College? Trade School? Union apprenticeship? The military? A job of some kind?

What will he choose?

I guess we’ll see when we see…

Walk The Walk

Mike Rowe Speaks at Boy Scouts of America National Annual Meeting

Between being an Eagle Scout and a 2nd Degree Black Belt, he’s got a lot going for him.

He also has a restless energy to do things. He seems to have picked up Kelly’s inability to sit still and chill.

Different strokes and all that…

He is very much his own man. He knows what he wants, whether he discloses that to the rest of us or not.

On the other hand, there are things that he doesn’t want but are happening anyway.

Kelly is in party-planning mode and is going to put on quite the shindig.

When she gets on the jazz, there’s absolutely no stopping her.

She’s a dedicated mama-bear who can turn an event into a phenomenon that nobody will ever forget.

Allan is pretty low-key, so Kelly’s going to amp things up. Literally. She bought a microphone and speaker thing specifically for this event.

She’s the hostess with the mostest and even though Allan’s going to act like it’s all cringey, it’s something he’ll be able to look back on and smile about some day.

Heroism

We never fail when we try to do our duty, we always fail when we neglect to do it. ~Robert Baden-Powell

That’s how The Sentinels – New Blood begins.

Tanda is trying to do her duty when she leaps off of a fire escape to catch the guy she was trying to arrest. The slippery little weasel threw his gun over the side. She didn’t want it on her conscience if someone walked off with that weapon and she figured she had cowed him into staying put until she got back with it.

No such luck. The dude was hoofing it up the stairs with his hands tied behind his back and the inevitable occurred. He lost his balance and fell over the side.

Her sense of duty was not only to keep that gun out of the hands of whoever might wander off with it, but also to save this joker from the ravages of gravity.

That’s dedication.

She’s young and well-meaning. It remains to be seen how long it takes for her to realize that being a superhero isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

We’re all going to have a great time at Allan’s ceremony. 🇺🇸 I hope you’re having a spectacular weekend, too.
