Not Quite Summer Hump Day

Well, it’s not quite 🌞Summer🔥 yet. I guess that’s why Kelly keeps turning off the damned AC even though it’s burning hot in here…

Hard Learned Lessons

The hardest arithmetic to master is that which enables us to count our blessings. ~Eric Hoffer

There are a lot of turning points in life.

Some have more impact than others. These are the events that help to define who we are.

Graduating from school, getting married, having kids, experiencing a life-threatening injury or illness. All of these can change your life permanently.

Suddenly, you aren’t who you were the day before.

Unless you are.

Some people don’t learn from even the most trying lessons.

Some people are just selfish, dumb and vain.

The downside to this is that you miss out on the blessings of appreciating the life you have.

The upside is that you might become President.

Art Imitating Other Art

Why The Boys TV Series Is WAY Better Than The Comics

People often decry the movie or TV adaptations of popular books, but I think this guy has a very good take on how this particular comic series was improved by the expanded talent pool involved in bringing this comic to life.

You could argue that the Game of Thrones series is better than the books because it actually finished in a reasonable time frame without decades of writer’s block in the middle. You could also argue that the books (albeit unfinished, George) are better than the show because the prose provides a lot of detail that is easily lost in the spectacle of the dramatization.

This is the hazard of the sole creator or small team.

You might get a marvelously well-constructed series such as Lord of the Rings, Wheel of Time or the various works of Tom Clancy. On the other hand, you might get a myopic bit of rant-as-art.

I’m hoping not to produce the latter in my own series. Guess we’ll see.

Individualism

Art is the most intense mode of individualism that the world has known. ~Oscar Wilde

Ultimately, however, any of these ideas start off as the brainchild of one person.

Even if that person is set up in a creative partnership such as a comic book team, somebody has an idea and either runs with it or bounces it off of their colleagues to get it going.

It’s not until it hits the screen (large or small) that you start expanding that vision among screenwriters, directors, actors, makeup artists, costumers, prop and weapon manufacturers, key grips, set designers… that things literally take a life of their own.

In some projects, everybody on board has a clear idea of how to bring the book or comic to life.

In others, things kind of go off the rails and wind up bearing no resemblance to the source material.

Therein rests the hazard of licensing rights to your intellectual property. You might wind up with a fantastic work that enhances the experience of your fans or you might wind up with a horrendous dud that tarnishes your brand.

It’s something to keep in mind for later. I’ve still got to finish my stories before anyone can put them on screen. I don’t have George’s clout. I can’t televise an unfinished work. Of course, given what happened to Season 8 of GoT, it seems he ought to have finished the books once HBO began filming Season 1.

That’s it for today. I’ve got a lot to do and not a lot of brainpower to pull it off with. Hope your week is fabulous and productive.
