Summer Solstice 2023

The 🌞Summer Solstice🔥 brings us National 🥤 Smoothie 🥤 Day, but there’s some friction in the prospect. If it was National Somebody Comes Over And Makes A Smoothie For Me Day, I’d be totally down for it.

Give It A Rest

Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under trees on a summer’s day, listening to the murmur of the water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is by no means a waste of time. ~John Lubbock

There’s a time for afterburners and a time to recover. I’ve had quite enough of the afterburners at this point.

🌞Summer🔥 is hot enough without kicking the afterburners on high.

You’re not supposed to hold it down! It’s only for short boosts! ~Alexander Dane

So that’s work. How’s life? Well, I got out for a walk last night.

In the dark.

If that’s the only time I can get away from my workload for a minute, then that’s when I get away. At least I walked. The mile and a half whole circuit around my neighborhood.

Hardly a marathon, but considering how rarely I get out it’s a lot.

I need to do a lot more. The needle on the scale still hasn’t budged and I won’t lose an ounce sitting around obsessing over complex queries and random programming assignments.

Time to kick back and lighten up a bit.

One of the nicest things about my least favorite season is the abundance of fresh fruit. I’m not that big a fan of smoothies, but with a glut of berries and melons around it certainly gives one an excuse to break out the blender.

Or rather, for someone else to break out the blender. I’m not fond enough of smoothies to go to the trouble of setting up, preparing and cleaning up, just to get two or maybe three glasses of drink out of the ordeal.

Fortunately, they sometimes have smoothies at the little vendor kiosks in the middle of the mall. Unfortunately, I pretty much never go to the mall, so they’re not in a position to get my money.

Sugar-free milkshakes just take a large mug, a large spoon and a few ingredients. Easy-peasy. I suppose smoothies are healthier, but I don’t find them to be worth the effort.

When They’re Happy

People don’t notice whether it’s winter or summer when they’re happy. ~Anton Chekhov

The great thing about an engaging book is that it can truly take you away from your current circumstances.

Waiting for a plane to depart? You can wait in Middle Earth instead of a crowded airport.

Bored and lonely? You can delve into the political schemings and hordes of cast members in Westeros.

You can go somewhere and somewhen else by cracking open a book.

Doesn’t have to be a great work of literature. As long as it makes some level of narrative sense, it’s a great getaway from whatever’s vexing you.

I, on the other hand, get a great deal of joy and relaxation from writing a book. Some people do. It takes all kinds.

The great thing about the fact that my least favorite season has begun is that it gets me another day closer to my most favorite season. Hmm, I wonder if they have Pumpkin 🎃 Spice 🎃 Smoothies🤔
