National Chicken Wing Day 2023

So, today is National Chicken Wing Day and I woke up just in time for supper. Mmm, wings…

Stupidly Tired

Sustained exhaustion is not a rite of passage. It’s a mark of stupidity. ~Jason Fried

Yeah, I’m freaking tired and it’s largely my own fault. Trying to do too much in my condition is not recommended and it’s not sustainable.

Thing is, I’ve still got a ton of stuff to do and I’m the only one doing it at the moment. That will soon stop being a factor. My new colleague is not only very skilled, but he’s also eager to get going. Phenomenal!

Be that as it may, I overdid it this week and I’m paying the price for it this weekend. Fortunately, it is the weekend and I’ve got carte blanche for sleeping in and actually recovering from the previous week’s extreme overdoing.

At this point, I don’t have the oomph to make any chicken wings. Even if I did, I wouldn’t have the energy to fiddle around with a bunch of boney snacks.

I Like Mine Boneless

Don’t Eat Another Boneless Wing Until You Watch This

I was hoping to find a video of the comedian who insisted that boneless chicken wings are actually chicken butt. 🤣 Well, according to the video above, they’re generally either cuts of breast meat or they’re glorified chicken nuggets of particulate meat and binders.

Glamorous.

Perhaps, but I’d still rather have a glorified chicken nugget than an actual wing. They rarely have enough meat to make them worth attempting to eat, IMO.

I don’t find an appeal in food you have to struggle to eat. The point of food is to eat it, not wrestle with it. I like mine to be prepared for consumption rather than stuggle.

Mostly, because I’m often too tired to be bothered with extraneous effort, but also because when I eat I want to clear my plate. Leaving a bunch of nasty bones and sticky fingers is not my preferred medium.

No ⚡ Energy

Energy is the key to creativity. Energy is the key to life. ~William Shatner

I simply have no extra energy for all that. Wasting effort on stuff that ought to be easy is, by definition, wasteful.

If you’re wasting effort, you’re wasting energy. If you’re wasting energy, you can’t get the things you want to do done.

There is only so much one person can do. You might have plans, but you’ve got to have the energy to execute them.

There are a few ways to manage that.

You can try to be Ultraman and go all out until the little energy beeper on your chest tells you that you’re running out of juice.

You can try to be Batman and have every single contingency covered.

You can try to duplicate yourself by farming some of the work out.

The thing is, we’re not genetically engineered to be the best at everything with a relentless drive to exceed and dominate.

We’re only human and there’s only so much we can do. We need to plan our work and work our plan. In order to do that, you actually have to have a plan.

For me, it’s trying to get back to a work/life balance. I am currently wildly out of balance because, as James Clear observes in his book, Atomic Habits: “You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems.” Unfortunately, my system sucks.

Getting a better system will take time and effort that I don’t currently have. Right now, I need to sleep and regain the energy necessary to be able to make an actionable plan.

If you’re feeling as steamrolled as I am, be kind to yourself and take a rest. When you’re properly rested, you’ll have the energy and presence of mind to construct a new action plan to accomplish your goals.

That’s all for today. I hope you are getting some R&R and some boneless wings this weekend. The other kind? Ain’t nobody got time for that…
