The “Dog Days of Summer” are nearly over and I’m having one of those blah kinds of days.

Summer Heat

I don’t know about you, but hot weather absolutely sucks the life out of me. I want to just find a nice cool rock to lay down on and zone out like a lizard.

Unfortunately, that doesn’t get me any closer to paying the bills.

Neither does continuing to have severe ankle pain when you need to return to a job that involves standing for 12 hours at a time.

Neither does getting jerked around by the Workman’s Comp insurance adjuster who won’t approve me for physical therapy so I can get rid of the aforementioned ankle pain.

The silver lining, however, seems to be that there’s a possibility of getting desk job. I will (theoretically) be having an interview for a programming position on Friday afternoon. With any luck, that will be mutually satisfactory and I can get back to work in an environment that doesn’t depend on me being in perfect physical condition at all times in order to simply be allowed to walk in the door.

Summer Clouds

We’ve been getting a lot of rain this year. That’s a good thing. The alternative is quite unpleasant.

That being said, there can be too much of a good thing. The bumper crop of precipitation has led to flooding in my general area.

It also delays ongoing road projects and causes more than a few new ones to pop up (literally).

For good or ill, into every life some rain must fall. I like the rain because it waters the local farmland and leads to delicious fruits and vegetables in the farmstands and local grocery stores.

I also like the rain because it gives me yet another excuse to stay inside.

Who knows? I might even get some work done…

Summer Winds

I can’t change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to always reach my destination. ~Jimmy Dean

It is a characteristic of successful people that they can take whatever circumstances they’re faced with and turn it to their advantage.

Whether you’re running a hot hundred yard dash or bouncing and trouncing your way through a tumultuous ninja obstacle course, life has its surprises for everybody. There are obstacles on even the straightest of runs. There are opportunities for advantage in the most daunting of challenges.

What you do with whatever curveballs life throws you determines your outcome.

What do you do?

What did I do?

Well, when I twisted my ankle, I took the medical advice and rested. Rest is good. It gave me a chance to binge some of my favorite shows and books.

I’ve already torn through 3½ Ed McBain novels, polished off all available episodes of Kojak on Hulu, ripped through Marvel’s Runaways and Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger, written tons of backstory for my Sentinels novels and juggled a fair few notions for products to produce on Nichyssoise.

Am I reaching my destination? Not exactly.

The purpose of the night job was to help catch up and stay up on bills.

Well, if I can’t even go and I can’t get paid it’s not getting me to the destination.

I’ve been resting in hopes of recuperation.

Oh well, I’m old and it’s not happening. The ankle isn’t getting better on its own.

I’ve been waiting in hopes of common sense taking hold and that the insurance adjuster will permit me to get the needed physical therapy at my local office. That doesn’t seem to be forthcoming.

So, I’m adjusting my sails and steering toward this computer job I’m interviewing for on Friday. Whether or not that pans out, it’s merely a waypoint on my course.

As much as I need to kick back and endure the “Dog Days of Summer“, I need to wrestle those sails and get going on my journey to the Promised Land.

Lazing around for the summer is fun, but sometimes there are chores to be attended to. It’s high time I got to it.

That’s enough random rumination for one scorching summer day. Next time, you’ll hear how the interview went and what it means in the grand scope of things.
